The Politics of Debt

I’ve had it! Today, with the excuse of President Bush vetoing a measure to help insure the health of children, the blogsphere became a Bush-bashing festival. Guys! People! Stop this! I don’t buy the arguments that Bush is uncompassionate, insensitive or even evil. What kind of serious political argument is that?
Those who compare what the president did today with his actions during Hurricane Katrina are not only misled themselves, but also are misleading. This vetoing affects not only primarily black and poor children; it affects almost all of them. So stop with that, this is clearly a more democratic and egalitarian measure.

Then comes the argument of his hypocrisy. Those who mention his compassionate pro-life stance and wonder how he can deny children in needed access to healthcare while he is paying for a war, are even more wrong. They do not understand that the War on Terrorism is an open-ended war, and that our president is preventing the kids of today from becoming the soldiers of tomorrow, thus saving more lives than the myopic critics care to see.

Of course, next come the born again fiscal conservatives. These are people who until yesterday did not care about sound fiscal policy, many of whom would have run large deficits with so called “social” programs, like universal health-care or education. All of the sudden, these real hypocrites, care about our record deficit. Give me a break! We need to reduce the deficit, all right, but we also need to bribe politicians and warlords in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. We need the money to reconstruct the infrastructure somebody destroyed in Iraq; we need that money to overpay ruthless mercenaries. Don’t you understand than when the open-ended War on Terror ends we will reap the financial benefits of a peaceful world?

Remember 9/11!

What a difference six years make! Who but President Bush had the fortitude to ignore the pre 9/11 pressures for action? Who had the guts not to panic when receiving the intelligence report titled “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S”? Those who criticize him choose just to ignore that, thanks to him, we stood more united than ever on 9/12.

Remember how his actions brought us together despite the bitterness created during the 2000 elections? Remember the sweet smell of the first flag you bought on 9/12? Remember the pride you felt when you charged your first big purchase on your card that weekend? Where are those feelings now?

Those who criticize President Bush do not understand that his paths, like those of the lord are inscrutable for us mere mortals. Our role in society is not to criticize him, but to pray for the best and prepare for the worst.
