I’ve spoken of the shining city all my political life, but I don’t know if I ever quite communicated what I saw when I said it. But in my mind it was a tall, proud city built on rocks stronger than oceans, windswept, God-blessed and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace; a city with free ports that hummed with commerce and creativity. We are witnessing a wide spread campaign around the issue of illegal immigration. Once again, the arguments have more in the way of hysteria and half-truth than reason. 9/11 is used falsely, once more, to push an unrelated agenda. In the same way that they used it to push the need for the War in Iraq, now they are using the excuse of national security to push the illegal immigration issue. The illegal immigration issue is bringing about some of the worst traits of some Americans, bigotry, racism, and national entitlement are being call upon to support a non-issue.

One important question that nobody is asking regarding illegal immigration is this: How would the police forces know who is an illegal immigrant? The answer is simple, illegal immigrants are those who do not have proper identification. This means that all Americans will need to start carrying some kind of proper identification. And, how would they know who does not have it? By asking everyone to identify himself or herself.

We Americans have been generally against any compulsory form of identification. It is our right “to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures.” We have given up our Fourth Amendment rights at airports and seaports. Now they are trying to make us give up our Fourth Amendment right altogether using the excuse of illegal immigration.

Once again, beware of illegal immigrants… when they are being used as an excuse to take away your freedoms.
