Pardon our ads

Unless you count with Adblock Plus or other similar product, you will have noticed that I am running a banner now. I’ve avoided so far adding ads to the site, but my soon 16 year old son is starting to drive. How is that related? Well, let me explain it to you.

Insurance companies charge you for a 16 year old what amounts to the replacement cost of the car per year. Basically, if he drives a $6000 dollar car, they will charge me $6000 dollars per year for his insurance alone. I think that it is completely irrational and unjust, but I don’t make the rules. It is irrational because it forces parents to buy old cars for their kids, putting the least experience drivers behind the wheel of the least reliable and the more unsafe car in the household. It is unjust because the kids are statistically targeted, which I think it should be considered a form of discrimination.

So I have several options:

  • Buy him a cheap car and pray he and his friends are safe
  • Buy him a separate insurance that does not insure the car at all, and pony up now and then $1000 to $3000 in car repairs (have you noticed that a 5 mile/hour fender bender will cost you upwards of $1000 in repairs?), or
  • Use money that otherwise would be saved for his future to pay the outrageous insurance rates

So I decided that I will try and make the extra amount from sources that otherwise would not produce and income. My goal is that every reader of an article contributes 30 cents towards his insurance. Since neither I want to charge 30 cents for reading an article neither you want to pay it (by the way, you see how the inflationary spiral works, if the car insurance was 10% of that, I would be looking at 3 cents per reader) I decided to monetize the traffic to the site.

So, again, pardon the ads, and I hope they don’t interfere with the reading. By the way, and this is a free endorsement, if you are tired of Web ads, install Adblock Plus. It is free, community based, and it makes a great work blocking ads, pop-ups, and other necessary evils.

  1. im using ads gone and working fine with me.

  2. your blog’s layout is fine, in fact it looks better than other blogs… the ‘clutter’ on other blogs very much interferes with the reading experience… and in more ways than one its such a big turn-off…

  3. Your layout is OK. I already used to ignore web page advertisements so I have no problem with it ;)

  4. Yeah, the insurance for 16 year olds is quite ridiculous. Sadly, I would rather be driving near some 16 year olds than senior citizens. I just saw a pretty risque Kung Fu ad, though.
